Rohit For Atlanta

Civil Rights Leader Charles Black Named Campaign Chair for Rohit Malhotra’s Bid for Atlanta City Council President.

Atlanta, GA — Civil rights leader and former chairman of the Atlanta Student Movement, Charles A. Black, has been named Campaign Chair for Rohit Malhotra’s campaign for Atlanta City Council President.

The announcement follows Malhotra’s recent launch of his candidacy to become the 10th City Council President in Atlanta’s history.

Charles Black, a Morehouse College alumnus, moved to Atlanta in 1958. While at Morehouse, he was one of eight students to study under the mentorship of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In 1960, Black co-authored An Appeal for Human Rights, a landmark document that became a cornerstone of the civil rights movement in Atlanta. He later served as Chair of the Atlanta Student Movement, a coalition of young people who advocated for desegregation across the city. Throughout his life, Black has remained a tireless champion for justice, continuing to this day to lead policy initiatives that advance civil and human rights.

“I’ve learned a lot in this work— but most importantly, I know that in times of crisis, we need good, bold, and moral leadership,” said Black. “That’s why I am so proud to be the Chair for Rohit Malhotra’s campaign to be the next Atlanta City Council President. Rohit is my dear mentee, but more importantly my very close friend. He cares so deeply for Atlanta.”

The leadership of Charles Black is one of many efforts that the Malhotra campaign is taking to build a multi-generational campaign focused on addressing Atlanta’s widening economic inequality, protecting small businesses, increasing transparency in government, and strengthening the city’s creative and transportation infrastructure. “Mr. Charles Black is a reminder of the historic shoulders Atlanta stands on,” said Malhotra. “So many sacrificed so much in the name of a better future. It is because of leaders like him that I feel a deep responsibility to serve our city.”

Malhotra brings over 15 years of public service experience to the race. He is the founder and former Executive Director of the Center for Civic Innovation, a nonprofit focused on civic research, policy, and entrepreneurship. Under his leadership, the organization supported nearly 200 grassroots initiatives to improve economic and social outcomes in Atlanta. Malhotra previously served in the Obama Administration as an Ash Innovation Fellow and earned his Master in Public Policy from Harvard University’s John F. Kennedy School of Government.

“His leadership is exemplary, his experience is extensive, and his character is exceptional,” said Black. “Rohit is the right choice for our city.”
